Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities for a Housing Officer include:

  • collecting rent income
  • developing policies to deal with arrears
  • keeping in regular contact with tenants and other stakeholders
  • dealing with repairs
  • dealing with neighbour noise and nuisance issues
  • processing applications for housing improvements
  • dealing with abandoned tenancies, squatters and unauthorised occupants
  • dealing with housing applications and the transfer of existing tenants
  • liaising with wardens, caretakers, cleaners and other maintenance staff

Skills and Qualifications

Successful Housing Officers will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • excellent teamwork, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • good written and oral communication
  • strong numeracy ability
  • knowledge of housing regulations and the 1996 Housing Act
  • the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • a good negotiator and problem-solver
  • the ability to work with diverse social groups

Entry without a degree into this field is possible. Personal qualities and experience tend to outweigh formal qualifications, although larger housing associations are more likely to employ graduates. Degrees in Housing, Facilities Management, Land, Estate or Property Management, Urban Studies or Planning may prove beneficial if trying to break into this field.

Salary Details

  • entry salaries range from £19,600 to £26,835 per annum dependant on qualifications, experience and location
  • social housing posts usually include a car allowance of up to £1,000 per annum
  • housing officers generally work 35 hours per week flexi-time during standard office hours
  • the role is typically 50% office-based, 50% site based
  • many employers offer flexible hours, job sharing and career breaks
